Research Degrees

The Institute was the first private college in Australia approved to award doctoral degrees in business-related subjects.  Additionally, we offer a master’s level research qualification, for which Gibaran was also the first private provider with the authority to do this.

Thus, together, our innovative research degrees portfolio comprises:

- M.Mgt. (Master of Management)
- DBA (Doctor of Business Administration)

- Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy)

With an excellent track record of successful supervision, we have developed sound procedures that meet the needs of modern research students who are invariably engaged at the same time in the world of work.  We are also able to draw on an accomplished network of supervisors and industrial contacts, not only in Australia but around the world.

As with all of the Institute’s programm, there is a presumption that the student is familiar with the workplace and will draw on this as a fruitful learning laboratory.  Under Professor Selva Abraham’s leadership, the Institute has pioneered the practice of work-applied management learning, and any one of the above research programs will enable this particular approach to be put into practice.

For entry to both doctoral programs we would expect our students to possess not only appropriate prior qualifications (specified in relation to each of the programs) but also management experience at a suitable level and duration.

The question is often asked whether to pursue either the MMgt route or one of the two doctoral programs.  Much depends on your own background, on your particular skills and aptitude, and on your career path.  In any case, some students start on the MMgt and convert later to a doctoral program.

When it comes to choosing between a DBA or Ph.D., it is important to note that both are doctoral degrees and that neither is implicitly better than the other.  But they are different and you should choose what is best for you.

In the following sections you can read more about each program. For more information you can also contact Nicola Markus on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 08 8212 8111.
