Master of Management

The Master of Management (MMgt) offers working managers an ideal opportunity to combine an element of coursework at Master’s level with an in-depth research project.  The research undertaken is invariably designed to be useful to the candidate’s organization.

For the practicing manager, the Master of Management offers a number of advantages:

- it can reasonably be completed in 18 months, although up to 3 years is permitted;

- there is a choice of a research pathway (in which a thesis is the main component) or a professional pathway which allows a candidate to ‘mix and match’ coursework with a reduced-length thesis;

- there is provision for suitable candidates to transfer to the Doctor of Business Administration program after 18 months;

- such candidates will be required to extend their research and write a longer thesis; this will normally take another 18 months.  In other words, through the MMgt route it is still possible to obtain a DBA within 3 years.

You will be accompanied and supported on your research journey by an expert Research Supervisor.  Where it is not feasible to have regular face-to-face interaction, use will be made of other means of communication.  Contact will also be encouraged with other research students.

More details on both pathways and on the regulations for transfers to the DBA programme are provided in the respective course brochures (as attached).

As with all AIB programmes, the Master of Management is accredited within the Australian Qualifications Framework.

When can I join?
Starting dates are flexible and, as far as possible, are designed to suit the candidate.

How long will it take to complete?
The course will normally be completed in a period of between eighteen months and three years.

What qualifications do I need to be accepted?
AIB will be looking for candidates with:

  • - a bachelor’s degree with minimum upper second class honours or equivalent, or a previous master’s degree;
  • - proficiency in written and spoken English, and in relevant numeracy skills;
  • - management experience of 3-5 years;
  • - a proposed research topic in an area acceptable to AIB; and
  • - where relevant, a letter of consent from your organization, confirming support for the proposed workplace research.

Candidates without all of the above requirements may still apply and their case will be considered on a discretionary basis.

Can I join if I live outside Australia?
Yes, thanks to modern communications, you can.  Regular contact with your supervisor is essential but this can be achieved in different ways.

How much will it cost?
Current fee rates and associated conditions will be provided separately by the Research Manager.  Discounted rates are sometimes available.

AIB is a member of a Tuition Assurance Scheme for the protection of student fees.
