5 Minutes with MBA Graduate Elle Mackay

5 Minutes with MBA Graduate Elle Mackay

MBA Graduate Elle Mackay and her husband, Simon Mackay, took the time to discuss why Elle chose to undertake an MBA, and how Elle and Simon managed to balance the experience with their personal commitments.

How did you find out about Australian Institute of Business (AIB)?

Elle: I was at a conference in Kuala Lumpur, and I was reading the paper in the hotel in between sessions. I saw an advertisement about entrepreneurship, and studying with AIB – so I decided to take a leap towards my future goals.

In which format did you study your MBA? Why?

Elle: I chose to be in class, and be part of the group. Despite living interstate, I thought that the interaction, networking, and the building of relationships with facilitators was really important – so I made the effort to fly here and be a part of the group. For me personally, I think that investment was so crucial.

Were you supported by your family whilst studying your MBA with AIB?

Elle: The family support was probably the most important factor of my studies – my husband and I work together within our own business, and he has completed a Masters degree. So his support, both through the business aspects and family aspects of my life – it was very important. We set out what we’d need to do in order for me to complete my degree – what we needed to achieve, how we needed to achieve it, what time investment would my studies require and so on.

Simon: It was difficult, but we managed to communicate our way through it. Even before Elle began her MBA, our family didn’t have a regular cycle in our life – we chose life as a part of work, and work as a part of life. A lot of our days were already 12 to 14 hours long, but we loved what we were doing and we were excited about our achievements. Elle’s always been a brilliant businesswoman, but having the academic framework around has accelerated her career immensely.

How would you sum up your AIB experience?

Elle: The challenges were large, but the reward is incredible. I’ve learnt so much – the MBA programme steers you in the direction of what you’re passionate about. I loved Marketing, New Venture Creation, Entrepreneurship and even Operations. By applying the knowledge to what I did in my businesses, I was able to gain a great deal of insight. It’s been a fantastic experience.
