5 Minutes with PhD Graduate Diane Kalendra
PhD Graduate and AIB Academic, Diane Kalendra, kindly took a few minutes to share with us her experience of joining AIB, and why she elected to complete a doctoral qualification.
When did you begin working with Australian Institute of Business?
My journey with AIB actually started back in 2000. At that time, AIB had only just started offering the MBA programme. I met with Professor Selva Abraham, who persuaded me that it would be a better idea if I did a research degree.
What attracted you to AIB?
My decision to go with AIB was to bridge that academic world of theory with the practical and I thought that was so important, in terms of the decision I made to go with AIB, and that certainly is my focus still to this day.
The other attraction was the journey. The journey that they create for you at AIB is personal for you, as it was for me. The belief that the staff have had in me, it’s a big workload. They are there to support that, and believe that you can do it.
How did you find the PhD experience?
I originally didn’t know what to expect. Professor Selva told me that, “All I had to do was have a project and write it up.” It was that easy. Well I did it, and it wasn’t that easy, but I did end up with a PhD! When I consult now, my business involves taking theoretical concepts, which can be abstract to a certain degree, and assist people to apply those concepts in their own businesses. It was a really fantastic experience.
