Post-MBA Salary Expectations

Money isn’t the only reason to study an MBA degree, but for most people it’s a significant consideration. It’s also a good way to measure your return on investment.

While the exact increases vary depending on your role, industry and location, the evidence is positive. Salaries can start rising before you even graduate, and the benefits continue to build over the longer term.

Here’s how an MBA affects your salary, and what you can expect to earn.

Does an MBA increase your salary?

Increasing future earnings is a key motivation for professionals who are thinking about doing an MBA. For most professionals, the answer is yes, although the size of the increase can depend on your role, industry, experience and goals.

The evidence points in a consistent direction. In the 2024 Australian Alumni Insights Report, 72% of AIB MBA graduates in Australia reported a salary increase since starting their MBA.

Employer demand supports this too. GMAC’s 2026 Corporate Recruiters Survey found employer confidence in graduate management education is universal, with more than a third of global employers planning to expand their MBA hiring in 2026. MBA graduates are also expected to out-earn candidates hired directly from industry.

Average salary increases for MBA graduates

Salary growth can also come quickly for AIB MBA students. On average, Australian Alumni reported a $49,000 increase in annual salary since undertaking the MBA and a $20,000 increase in annual salary while still studying.

The biggest salary increases from an MBA tend to come quickly, so the total return on investment on the degree over the course of a whole career can be substantial.

What is the average MBA salary in Australia?

According to the most recent Alumni Insights Report, the average salary of AIB MBA graduates in Australia is $175,000.

To put that in context, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated average weekly ordinary time earnings for full-time adults (seasonally adjusted) at $2,051.10 in November 2025 — around $106,700 a year. On that basis, some AIB MBA graduates earn approximately 64% more than the national average.

This comparison illustrates the earning potential of the qualification and your own outcome may reflect your individual circumstances.

How an MBA could increase your future earnings

Employers aren’t obliged to pay you more simply because you hold an MBA, however, the qualification builds the foundations for higher earnings. It gives you is a set of advantages including seniority, skills, credibility and connections that, over time, tend to translate into increased salary.

Pathways to promotion

Career progression is a goal for many MBA students, and it often goes hand in hand with higher pay. 80% of Australian AIB alumni said the MBA had helped them progress their career, and 65% had received at least one promotion since starting their studies.

A higher value on the job market

An MBA can raise how the market values you – not just in title, but in the roles and responsibilities employers trust you with. In GMAC’s 2026 Corporate Recruiters Survey, 100% of employers expressed confidence in graduate management education, and employers were especially confident in MBA graduates’ ability to handle complex global business environments and bring a versatile skill set to their organisations.

An increased ability to negotiate

2026 Robert Half Research suggests around 69% of employers are open to increasing on the initial offer, yet many candidates accept the proposed salary without pushing back. An MBA helps close that gap.

Beyond the negotiation, communication and advocacy skills it develops, 94% of Australian AIB alumni said the MBA increased their confidence, including greater confidence in articulating themselves with senior leaders and stakeholders. That confidence is often what turns a strong case into a stronger salary.

A stronger network

Our graduates gain access to a global community of more than 20,000 alumni, students, academics and industry partners across over 100 countries. AIB keeps you connected through in-person events, online study communities, industry panels, digital publications and mentoring initiatives.

A network of this scale can be one of the most direct routes to higher earnings, because many of the best-paid roles are filled through referrals and relationships rather than public job ads. It isn’t only the size that counts, it’s who’s in it. AIB’s community includes experienced leaders and executives across all industries whose connections can open doors to more senior, and therefore often higher paying roles.

Unless indicated, AIB graduate outcomes are from the 2024 Australian Alumni Insights Report.
