Subject Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, you will be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate organisational learning and development and its strategic application in practice.
  • Diagnose learning and development needs that align with the organisation’s strategic focus.
  • Design an evidence-based organisational learning and development initiative to address current and future organisational needs whilst maintaining professional integrity.
Key Topics
  • The strategic role of organisational learning and development
  • Adult learning theories
  • Identifying and diagnosing organisational learning and development needs
  • Design, implementation and evaluation of organisational learning and development

Studying Organisational Learning and Development, students complete two assessments that focus on identifying and addressing learning and development needs within an organisation. The first assessment is an investigative report that involves conducting an evidence-based diagnosis of a learning and development gap within an organisation, aligning the findings with its strategic priorities. This sets the foundation for the second assessment, where students design a comprehensive learning and development initiative.

“I consistently saw the same problem in organisations I worked in: talent wasn’t developed, investment in training wasn’t valued and employees left due to lack of professional development and training opportunities. With an eye on a future career in learning and development, I chose Organisational Learning and Development as an elective. Together with my other MBA subjects, OLAD gave me clarity on where my strengths and passion lie.”

What will I take away from Organisational Learning and Development?

Albert Einstein said, “if I were given one hour to save the planet, I would spend 59 minutes defining the problem and one minute resolving it”.

Although this subject is about optimising employee performance, the way in which that is achieved is through the human resource development process, which is a systematic way at interrogating a performance-based problem or opportunity to understand why the development opportunity exists, which makes it much easier to deploy targeted solutions that employees will resonate with. Think of it like removing performance bottlenecks and amplifying employee growth. Thus, you’ll take away a systematic process that can be transferable across any organisation that has individuals driving performance, which will enable you to have greater potential for genuine impact in any organisation.

Do I need prior knowledge in learning and development to succeed in this subject?

No, prior knowledge of learning and development is not required. However, if you have worked in an organisation in any capacity that requires you to look at the employee performance, identify performance and address them, that experience would be extremely helpful. However, this is not a prerequisite.

What’s the career potential in the learning and development field?

Organisational learning and development typically fits within the field of human resource management, which attracts students that are passionate (evenly mildly) about amplifying individual, team or organisational performance. So, it’s not unusual that students ignite a spark for learning and development as a result of doing this subject, which means they often transition from other management-related roles into more specialised organisational learning and development – from learning and development managers through to Heads of People and Culture, depending on prior business experience.

Can I specialise my MBA in HR?

Yes, AIB offers an MBA specialisation in Human Resource Management. It’s often the pathway of choice for HR specialists, those working toward a career change into HR or professionals with a keen interest in the management of people as an organisation’s most valuable asset. Studying the specialised HR MBA, students will take AIB’s core business subjects before undertaking the HR discipline units: Managing People in a Global Context, Managing Change and Organisational Learning and Development. Following completion of the final subject – Project – they will earn their MBA specialised in HR.
