Originally from Kenya, Michael Koloboy has never been comfortable with settling and has always looked for the next opportunity to do better.

Starting his career as a Finance and Administration Manager fresh from graduating with an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance, he later joined a private company as an Accountant in Nairobi. That’s where his career really began to take off. After 3 short years, he accepted a role as Chief Financial Officer in Nairobi. He later then left to take on a role as an Auditor for a private audit firm before leaving Nairobi to pursue his dream of completing his MBA.

Fast forward to 2017, Michael completed his MBA specialising in Finance, where he soon after took on the role he is currently in, as an overseas Group Finance Manager for AUS Investment.

Michael was very excited to share with us that thanks to investing in himself through his studies, he has had many opportunities – including further certifications and memberships with leading industry bodies such as ICMA Australia and CPA Australia. Thanks to the leadership skills he gained through the AIB Leadership subject, his political party and community are now considering him for an MP seat in the Kenyan parliament – an exceptional achievement!

We spoke to Michael to discuss his motivations to study for an MBA at AIB and how he found the experience overall.

What was your motivation to start an MBA?

I wanted to position myself for challenges that lay ahead in the ever-changing dynamic finance profession by gaining knowledge and a deep understanding of accounting & finance through professional qualifications

Did you have any apprehensions before studying, and what would you say to others feeling as you did?

Yes, regarding the time and cost of studying an MBA. While studying an MBA needs commitments and savings prior to commencing study if you are not sponsored, its benefits are worthy. I have gained a lot and my profile has since gained many tractions from prospective employers and respect from my peers.

Did you feel supported at AIB?

I had great support from AIB when doing my MBA. The lecturers were great and ready to go the extra mile to make you understand and develop specialised knowledge in the field of your specialisation. I applied the knowledge I gained studying an MBA in Finance to qualify as a Certified Management Accountant and am now a member of ICMA Australia.

Do you attribute any successes directly to accomplishing your MBA?

I gained more confidence and a deep understanding of my profession. That helped me pursue and qualify as a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Australia. I am now also a member of both ICMA Australia and CPA Australia where I am working towards further certifications.

What’s next for you?

As a way of giving back to my community, I plan to use the knowledge acquired during my MBA in public service. At the moment, I have been active in various charities impacting my community on financial literacy and investment options available to them to create wealth and improve their lives.
