Featured Business Leader Janine Allis

In another exciting development at AIB, we’re pleased that Janine Allis, entrepreneur, founder of food chain Boost Juice and Managing Director of its parent company, Retail Zoo, will be a special guest speaker at our AIB Graduation Ceremony, held in Adelaide on November 7th. An incredible businesswoman, she is a leader in the food and hospitality industry in Australia.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Janine Allis had a variety of dreams and desires growing up – one of which was to own her own business. After years of travelling, and a great deal of experience in a variety of marketing and publicity roles, Janine came across a business idea she wanted to pursue while on a family holiday in the United States. Like many people, Janine Allis was unhappy with the lack of quick and healthy food options available. While in the US, she noticed that there were stores offering juice options – healthier alternatives for other fast food outlet products. She was intrigued by the initial idea, but unsatisfied with the “close-enough” approach to healthy food employed in America. She came back to Australia, with a drive to build a business around quick, accessible, and above all nutritional juices.

Janine and her husband Jeff both had no experience in owning or managing a business, but they persisted with their idea and in early 2000, the doors to the first Boost Juice bar opened in Adelaide, South Australia. Her customer service philosophy was one of the driving factors in the success of their first store – that, along with a massive marketing campaign on local radio stations, helped Boost to attract a great deal of customers and interest in its early days. From there, they opened a second store – which quickly morphed into an agreement with the Westfield Shopping Centre Management to open Boost Juice stores in 18 Westfield centres around the country.

From there, Boost began to branch out further, working from a franchise model in order to support the rapid growth of the business. From that original Boost Juice store in Adelaide, the business has now grown to include over 180 stores in Australia, with a further 60 stores found globally in locations including Indonesia, Singapore, South Africa, the UK, Portugal, Hong Kong, Dubai and Chile.

In order to successfully manage this now-global company, Janine Allis is now the Managing Director of Retail Zoo, to support the franchisees for Boost. Retail Zoo also manages the franchising for Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill and most recently, Cibo Espresso – branding itself as a leading food and hospitality franchise support system.

For Janine Allis, the global expansion of Boost continues, along with building several more businesses under the Retail Zoo banner. In addition to her business success, she is also a published author – having written an autobiography about the rise of Boost Juice and her business adventures. She also speaks at business events about her experiences – and we’re delighted that she will be speaking at the Australian Institute of Business Graduation in Adelaide on November 7th, 2014.
