5 Minutes with MBA Graduate Brian Potgieter
On the day of his graduation, we sat down with Brian, MBA graduate from the class of 2015, to discuss how the MBA has impacted his career and more.
What motivated you to study an MBA?
The reason why I wanted to do my MBA was that I’ve been in management consulting and business improvement for the last 25 years, but I was really looking for something that would take me to the next level and cover all the areas that I have been involved with in business consulting.
How have you used the MBA to leverage your career?
I recently changed roles, and having an MBA on my CV has certainly helped me get further in interview stages. It’s also given me a much more rounded look at businesses. I’m much more comfortable in some of the areas where previously I wasn’t. I was very much in productivity improvement, but now I can help with the strategy side, corporate governance, etc.
You mentioned earlier that your wife and daughter are here to see you graduate today. How does it make you feel knowing that they’ll be watching you in the audience as you graduate?
I really wanted to be able to share the upside of doing the MBA, the graduation day, because they’ve had to go through a lot as well while I was studying. It did take a lot of my time. I didn’t extend it, I actually did it in 13 months, so it was a hard slog and they really supported me throughout the process. So I thought it was only fair that they share in the upside as well.
For my daughter, I’m hoping one day she follows suit. She’s 11 years old now and she’s been really looking forward to today as well.
