5 Minutes with MBA Graduate Lucinda Collier
AIB Graduate Lucinda Collier chose to specialise her MBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management to help her progress into a national role. While studying the MBA, she was able to achieve this goal in 12 months. Earlier this year in Brisbane we sat down with Lucinda to chat about her MBA experience.
Why did you choose to study with AIB?
AIB gave me the opportunity to study by distance learning which suited my lifestyle. When I took on the studies I was working full-time and my work load was already 10 hours a day, so to attend classes for me was not practical. Distance learning gave me the opportunity to study at night when I had time and could focus.
What was your motivation to complete the MBA programme?
My motivation to complete the MBA was really structured around my career choices and how I wanted to move from a site-based role to a national role in either workplace health and safety or quality management. I’d given myself a five-year timeframe to achieve that, but fortunately for me I was able to achieve it in 12 months while I was still studying the MBA. The study qualified knowledge that I already had in the workplace and it gave me the confidence to take the next step. All the study that I have done has complemented my current work, and I’m actually now consulting on international safety committees and on political party policies and it’s all based on the confidence I now have and my level of education.
How does that achievement make you feel?
I’m very pleased to say that the qualification gave me credibility in the business world. I’m thankful that this mode of study is now out there and available to people like myself who didn’t come into the academic world traditionally. I left school in year 10 so I didn’t get an OP score, but was able to come in through work experience. It’s great to have had that opportunity.
How has the MBA affected you?
My professional perspective has certainly changed. I had initially thought that maybe the national role would be my ultimate goal, but I can see now that the study can take me to another level. I’ve already achieved my five year goal in 12 months so I need to set a new goal now. I’m looking forward to going into further study that will allow me to move up to general manager role in the future.
