Karen Stocks talks leadership and innovation at Adelaide Student and Alumni Event
AIB was pleased to welcome Karen Stocks, former Managing Director of Twitter Australia, as guest speaker of the Adelaide Student and Alumni Leadership Event, which was held at the InterContinental Adelaide on Thursday 10th November.
Almost 230 guests attended the presentation, keen to hear about Karen’s leadership experience and how she sees leadership qualities and requirements changing to meet today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world.
As someone who worked at Vodafone, Google and Twitter before the brands were famous, Karen said her career has been a study in vocational planning, as none of these companies existed when she started university.
“One of the biggest changes I have seen throughout my career is the democratisation of information and communication. No longer is information only available to those who have the resources and connections,” she said.
While today it’s the norm for everyone to have instant access to the world’s information, and the ability to seamlessly communicate with anyone around the world, for Karen, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what’s to come.
“As leaders today, we all face a world that is changing at an unprecedented pace, a world where you might need to plan for a career that doesn’t yet exist, in industries that are disrupting the way we are used to doing things,” Karen said.
“To challenge this, one of my mantras is to always be learning. Doing an MBA for me was a perfect opportunity to consolidate all my experience with world-class learning, and ultimately improve my toolkit. It enabled me to learn new skills that I hadn’t been exposed to and further develop my leadership style,” she said.
“During my role at Twitter, I had to draw on my Marketing and HR theory from my MBA, and this proved to be invaluable for my career. I believe not challenging yourself is the fastest way to fail in leadership.”
