5 Reasons Why You Should Hire an MBA Graduate


In today’s dynamic business environment, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) is considered as a very valuable qualification.  According to the Graduate Management Admission Council  nearly three quarters of businesses plan to hire MBAs in 2014, up from 58% in 2011. With the job market becoming increasingly competitive, employers are becoming overwhelmed with the amount of candidates they must sift through. Of course, a variety of skills and knowledge are required for most roles, but here are five reasons why you should look to hire an MBA graduate in your next intake.

1. Broad skillset

As a graduate of an MBA degree, the candidate will be equipped with a diverse range of skills. During the MBA programme, students must have the ability to work autonomously and to a very high standard. They must be self-motivated and enjoy working in a challenging environment. They also work to deadlines and must be a high achiever in order to gain good marks. Regardless of the specific role, all of the above skills are extremely useful in a professional context.

2. Critical and up-to-date thinking

During the MBA degree, students are challenged in a number of situations and required to demonstrate their ability to think critically. In these tasks, they must show that they are able to solve problems in a professional and effective manner. The content requires them to scrutinise processes, and explore new opportunities in business. Finally, they must have an up-to-date knowledge of business, including a mindset focussed on the current business environment.

3. Copes well with change and pressure

Many employees look great on paper, but when it comes to adapting to change or working under pressure, they can fall short. The MBA programme is full of long hours, unexpected challenges and pressure. When you hire an MBA graduate, you can be assured that they are capable of coping well in challenging circumstances and will respond well to change.

4. Holistic understanding of business

Whilst MBA programmes differ slightly between providers, the majority of them cover all key areas of business. For example, AIB MBA students must complete subjects in the areas of finance, leadership, strategic operations issues, management, human resources and corporate governance.  As AIB graduate Andrew Werner adds, “The MBA gave me a more holistic overview of things like human resources and finance, outside the scope of what I knew”. When you hire an MBA graduate, you are hiring someone with the knowledge of how a business operates as a whole. This is very useful as it helps in understanding decision making and how it can affect other departments. It also helps in leadership roles where understanding all the functions and how they work together is crucial.

5. High calibre of students

The MBA is not your everyday degree – to get accepted into the programme there are a number of criteria that students must meet. It is an achievement within itself to get accepted into an MBA programme, and to complete it is an even bigger milestone. It is therefore clear that the quality of students who successfully graduate from an MBA programme are some of the best in their field, making them a wonderful candidate for a hire.
