Janine Allis to Deliver Keynote Address at AIB Graduation
At AIB’s Mid-Year Graduation Ceremony on June 15, the graduating class and their guests will be treated to a keynote speech from businesswoman Janine Allis. As the founder of Boost Juice Bars, Janine was a trailblazer for the healthy fast food market in Australia and has experienced great success since. Through Boost Juice’s parent company Retail Zoo, of which Janine is a Managing Director, she has promoted high quality Australian food and beverages across a range of franchises including Cibo Espresso and Salsas Fresh Mex Grill.
This isn’t the first time we’ve warmly welcomed Janine Allis to an AIB Graduation: she also delivered the keynote address at our Graduation Ceremony in 2014, and we’re delighted to welcome her back once again.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Janine Allis had a variety of dreams growing up – one of which was to own her own business. While on a family holiday in the U.S. with her husband and kids in 1999, Janine noticed that juice and smoothie bars were particularly popular. In Australia at the time, there was a distinct lack of healthy fast food options, which Janine saw as an opportunity.
Janine had little business experience, but her passion and drive made up for it. She researched the market in Australia extensively, developed the concept and wrote a business plan for what would become Boost Juice Bars. The very first Boost Juice bar was opened to the public in Adelaide in 2000.
Aided by her husband’s background in radio, they marketed the concept on South Australian radio and were an instant hit. Queues formed at the juice bar, and the business quickly expanded. Janine learned as she went, from negotiating that first retail lease to hiring her staff. Today, there are around 400 stores across the globe in 16 countries.
In 2007, Janine and Jeff expanded their business activities to include new food outlets. Their parent company Retail Zoo purchased Salsas Fresh Mex Grill, starting with four stores. Now, there is close to 50 stores. And in 2012, they added South Australia’s iconic Cibo Espresso franchise to the books. Today, Retail Zoo employs almost 7,000 people worldwide with no plans to slow down.
Janine has also appeared as a ‘shark’ on the Australian version of Shark Tank since its inception in 2015, encouraging would-be entrepreneurs to take the leap. She’s been named as the Telstra Business Woman of the Year, Amex Retailer of the Year and Awarded Exporter of the Year. BRW also named her 1 of 15 people that have changed the way Australia does business in the last 35 years.
Adding to her already impressive resume, the mother of four wrote the book The Accidental Entrepreneur, where she shared her entrepreneurial story, detailed her business journey and the all-important lessons she learned along the way.
We’re looking forward to the stories, insights and lessons Janine will share with our graduating class on June 15 as they celebrate the completion of their degrees and the beginning of the next phase of their careers.
