Why did you decide to study an MBA?
Having a technical background meant that I knew a lot about software but not as much about people. I’ve also done a Masters of Applied Finance, which gave me the finance background, but what I was looking for was something that would finesse that with perhaps management and understanding the big picture.
What were the best aspects of studying online with AIB?
The online format really suited the way I had to work. I was able to work at four to six in the morning. I could get that done and then go in to work. I could do it on the train. Some of the exams took place during the holidays and I could just go on holiday and actually do it there. So I could fit the MBA into my lifestyle without needing to change what I did every day.
What were you afraid of when you first started the MBA?
What scared me most when I started the MBA was I didn’t know whether I’d actually be able to pull through it. I was worried that I would get started and then just get so caught up in work I couldn’t get to the end of it. I was worried that I would get halfway through and then become demotivated.
How did you overcome that?
I think AIB are really good because they don’t stagger the terms at all, so two days after you finished one exam, you’re picking up the next one. I think that’s really good because it makes you keep that cadence all the time–you keep the routine. Once I had gone into the routine, I found I could manage it and it became easier. And so I think the most important thing is to very carefully structure your day for progress rather than perfection.
